Exploring Jacksonville’s Best Hiking Trails (And a Few Father-Son Favorites)

There’s a quieter side of Jacksonville that doesn’t make headlines — one you’ll find just off the beaten path, where marsh grass sways in the breeze and the only traffic is a fiddler crab skittering across your boot.

For my son Dax and me, hiking these trails has become more than just a weekend activity. It’s our ritual. Our reset. And this city is full of places that make it easy to step away from the noise and into nature.

Here are a few of our favorite spots — and a few reasons why Jacksonville is one of Florida’s best-kept secrets for people who love the outdoors.

🌳 Betz-Tiger Point Preserve – Oak Hammock Trail

A peaceful, canopied trail that follows the Nassau River. The wooden boardwalk leads to a dock where Dax and I always stop to watch the water stretch wide under the oaks.

Quiet. Wild. And just 25 minutes from downtown.

📍 13949 Pumpkin Hill Rd, Jacksonville, FL
🥾 Shaded loop, approx. 1.5 miles

🏖️ Little Talbot Island – Dune Ridge Trail

This one’s a favorite for both of us — especially when the trail opens up onto a windswept beach.

Dax always climbs the same driftwood tree near the edge of the dunes. It’s where salt air and childhood meet.

📍 12157 Heckscher Dr, Jacksonville, FL
🥾 4-mile loop, beach + forest terrain

🧭 More Trails Worth Exploring:

🦋 Julington-Durbin Preserve

Pine flatwoods, great wildlife, and well-kept loops for runners and families.

🌲 Spanish Pond Trail (Arlington)

Across from Fort Caroline — a shady, historic trail with boardwalks and a tie-in to French colonial history.

🦉 Crosby Sanctuary (Orange Park)

Less-traveled, bird-rich, and great for a slow, quiet walk through old Florida.

🚣‍♂️ Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park

Lake kayaking, camping, and trail loops with beach access — all in one spot.
